A domain name is a unique and easily remembered address which is used to access websites.
These domain names are sorted out and managed in DNS (Domain Name System). Any domain that is present in the DNS has been taken and therefore cannot be used again. This is what makes a domain name unique, making it easier to remember.
When you enter a domain name into your browser, it sends this request to a network of servers. This is then forwarded to the name servers, which are managed by a hosting company. The company will then forward this to where the website is stored (called a web server). The web server now gets the web page and the information and it is sent back to the browser.
There are 6 different type of domain names:
1) Top-Level Domains (TLDs) – At the top of the ranking for internet domain names. They are the parts that come at the end of the primary domain name e.g. .com or .net. They are also known as domain name extensions.2) Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) - These domain names are restricted to use in a specific country. An example of this could be .co.uk or .ie. These types of domain names are best if your target audience is only for one country.3) Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) - A different variation of TLD in the sense that the extension would refer to the type of use of the website. An example of these types of websites could be .edu for education or .org, which is used for not-for-profit organisations.4) Second-Level Domains (SLD) - This just means that they represent the second piece of information in a web address. An example of this is “google” in www.google.com.5) Third-Level Domain- A portion of a domain name. Commonly used when you're adding a sub-domain to an existing domain. This is basically the “www” which comes before anything in a web address.6) Premium Domain- Domain names that are desirable but already taken. They necessarily may not be used.
